Unit 2

2.1: Plan an arts project

Part A: Identify the project aims and desired outcomes

During the Summer, I planned to create an almost moving video of photographs that I collected with a Year 6 pupil from the Hartsfield school.
I will teach her how to use the camera and how to take different pictures of the scenes as well as camera angles and scripting for the characters whether they're alive or not.

I would create the video and post it on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube and wait for feedback and responses from not only friends and family, but the general public also.

Health and safety issues that would arise include onsight filming that could cause problems. I had to make sure that I had made sure it was clear and that there was little to no risk of any health threats/impairments. We cleared the garden before shooting the photographs for the final product.

I felt that this was a suitable project to carry out as I had had experience taking photographs and compiling them into my photo essays, and knowing that I want a future career in photography and film producing/directing, I felt that making a short film with pictures combined the two art styles to give me maximum experience possible. I used Windows Movie Maker, a simple software to create both my photoessays and my final compilation video to give me editing and sound knowledge.

I plan to show this final product to the Year 8 class (now Year 9) and to receive their feedback afterwards.
I will ask the teacher that I did my experience with before I show the video to the class. I will pass round a blank page with the title FEEDBACK for the class to write any comments on what went wrong/right/could be improved. The exhibition will be within their class either a few moments before or in the few minutes at the end of their lesson. I will have to make sure that in the unfortunate event of a fire, that the doorway is clear and I am aware of the nearest Fire Exit. Although an adult will be there, I need to be aware of this.

2.2: Deliver the project

Project Plan

As part of this project, I will ask Mrs Stevens to use her class to showcase my photofilm. I have already emailed her of my intentions, however due to other studies, I have yet to show the film to them.
The role of Mrs Stevens will be to get the class in to their lesson and prepared.
My role will be to inform them of my feedback sheet and what is required of them. I will need to also inform them of the Arts Award and I could possibly show them my Blog to give them a taster of what it requires.
In terms of resources, I need to make sure that I can use the laptop, set up and load my video on youtube and access the projector with ease. There isn't a particular budget for the exhibition of my work as I have created it off my own back in my own free time rather than spending a lot of money.

Before I show the photofilm that I have created I will ask the class how many are interested in or know of the Arts Award. With my showing of the photofilm and perhaps a photoessay, I intend to inspire and motivate the class to create their own in their own free time. I aim to show them that they don't have to wait around to become active in their lives and if they are interested in art or photography that this extra curricular activity may be highly commendable for their experience.

Self-assessing myself, I have been very confident with my developing skills in both photography and art as well as with other people. This has been the best experience for me in terms of developing myself as an artist as well as a student.

After showing them the film, these are just some of their responses:

"It's a great idea, and in my own opinion, truly creative. Photography is a fantastic thing to study, good and inventive. And I see the attention to detail is unbelievable. While adding simple and collective english, gives it an emotive story. If I had to nit pick on a particular area, the lighting could be attended. But in all honesty, you are going to do well and have fun"

"I thought the short video was really good and I liked it because it was about a gnome. I also think the photographs were good. I think it could have been longer though. But it was still great"

"I liked the use of Gnomes and speech. The speech made it more interesting to watch. A change of music to show the dramatic scenes would have helped the water understand what was going on better."

"Very creative and good, nothing that could have been improved. I enjoyed it greatly"

"The pictures added together made it seem like a small movie. I liked the use of text and the music added a much better effect to it. The pictures were also very well worked. The thing that could be improved is the speed of the slides was sometimes too fast to read the text."

"Very imaginative, I really enjoyed it, it was very creative. You can see that it was directed at a younger age group. It was very humorous."

Overall from my feedback, I realised that I needed to slow down the speed of the text, especially towards the end, and possibly add a small Sepia context of images before the main story so that the video is more understandable. This should be easier to understand and meet the comments of my feedback.

2.3: Review the project

I will receive feedback from the class on a piece of paper for each person and take a photo for my blog as evidence.
I will also ask Mrs Stevens to write a report of what she felt worked well and didn't as a professional. Also from a media point of view, she will give me a good insight into how I can improve the camera angles as well as editing and choice of music/colouring/mise-en-scene etc. This would be most effective as it will be quick and easy for the class to write so as to disrupt their lesson as little as possible.

I created a project along with a Year 6 pupil from the local Primary School - My sister. We used a Nikon D3000 camera, and I showed her how to use it as she did take some of the photos as well as helping with the set up of the location and the characters/props etc.
I personally showed it to a Year 9 class of students and collected their feedback as well as an industry professional - Mrs Stevens.
By working with another student, we both enhanced and practiced our creative knowledge and teamwork became an essential aspect. We worked hard for 7 hours straight, waiting for the right weather and lighting as well as wind which all effected continuity.
Not only did we get a creative insight into photography and editing, we also got an insight into scriptwriting for the characters as we had to set this up during the production and editing it afterwards, becoming the most vital part of the photofilm as without it, there was no narrative or story to tell. We gained basic experience using sound, editing and various camera angles.

To improve it, we could straighten some of the shots and make them the most effective that we can.
Similarly some of the continuity was off and could be improved to a higher standard to be made more believable.
